Portugal (1598-1621)-LB 2 cruzados Fr-54
This specimen was lot 3286 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$15,502 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KÖNIGREICH Philipp II. 1598-1621. 2 Cruzados o. J. Lissabon. ß · PHILIPPVS D · G · REX PORTVGAL · Gekröntes Wappen, l. L (darüber und zu den Seiten je ein Punkt) / B (darüber, darunter und zu den Seiten je ein Punkt), r. : / II / ://(Kreuz, bestehend aus fünf Punkten) IN · HOC (Kreuz, bestehend aus fünf Punkten) SIGNO · VINCES Kreuz, in den Winkeln je fünf Kugeln. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Feine Goldpatina, min. Prägeschwäche, sehr schön. (kingdom of Portugal, Philip II, 1598-1621, undated double cruzado, Lisbon mint. Obverse: crowned arms; reverse: voided cross with five dots in each field. Very rare, fine gold color, lightly cleaned, very fine.)"
In 1578, king Sebastian of Portugal was killed fighting the Moors in Africa. After some confusion, in 1580, Philip II moved in and annexed the country, which was held as part of the Spanish crown until 1640. All the gold coins of this period are rare.
