Aureo y Calicó sale 447, lot 1140

This specimen was lot 1140 in Aureo y Calicó sale 447 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 550 € (about US$719 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "s/d. Felipe II. Lisbon. 80 reis. Light hairlines. Rare. MBC [very fine]." The Spanish conquered and ruled Portugal 1580-1640. Numista attributes this coin to Philip I (II of Spain). Some varieties lack the "·:·" below the "LXXX" and others lack the triangles supporting the king's monogram. This one states "REX PORTVGAL", others have "REX PORTVGA" or "REX PORTVGALI". Based on the weight, it would have been worth about two reales.
