This specimen was lot 74439 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. Chinfrao, ND (1438-81)-L. Lisbon Mint. Alfonso V. PCGS AU-50. Exhibiting a great deal of originality and elegant charcoal toning, this piece stands as a charming example of the type. The reverse is particularly well-centered and retains some lovely underlying luster in the fields." Altho this chinfrão is not dated, we know it was struck after 1472, the date it was authorized. Alfonso died in 1481, aged 49 years.
