Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 52144
SB124-52144 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 52144 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $18,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Pontefract (besieged). Shilling Lozenge Klippe, 1648. Charles I. NGC MS-61. Obverse: DVM SPIRO SPERO, crown over large C R; Reverse: OBS P C, castle facade; hand holding sword to right. An incredibly impressive specimen, this type is already RARE and difficult to acquire, with the stunning degree of preservation offered here simply making it that much more irresistible. Featuring a rather strong strike for the type as well as deep and alluring cabinet toning, this example also lacks any evidence of wear or handling that is commonly observed. As such, for the advanced collector of the coinage of Charles I, the English Civil War, klippe-shaped issues, or obsidional coinage, this monumental survivor no doubt presents what may quite likely be a unique opportunity, and one which must not be missed or overlooked. From the Lucius S. Ruder Collection." The royalists also issued several other shillings (KM 380, KM 378, KM 383.2), a unite and a half crown.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 5.11 g.

Catalog reference: S-3148; N-2646; KM-381.
