This specimen was lot 30716 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $4,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Charles I octagonal Pontefract Besieged Shilling 1648-Dated (1649) VF35 PCGS. A wonderful type struck in 1649 after the execution of king Charles I and bearing the name of his son, Charles II. Produced during the siege of Pontefract castle in the dying throes of the English Civil War, this type represents a coinage of necessity produced from silver plate either given to or taken by the king's forces. The crude production, limited specie and heavy-circulation impacting this type renders the finding of a well-struck and scarcely handled example very difficult indeed. The present piece has seen some moderate circulation but was clearly produced to a high standard, its detail still sharp and its planchet handsomely toned to a gray-gold with hints of original luster. Certainly a piece for the discerning collector of British siege coins." The royalists also issued several other shillings (KM 380, KM 381, KM 383.2), a unite and a half crown.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 4.42 g.

Catalog reference: KM 378, Brooker-1234 (same dies), S-3150, N-2648.
