Pomerania 1640 thaler Dav-4571
This specimen was lot 25073 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Pomerania. Taler, 1640. Stettin Mint. Christina of Sweden. PCGS EF-40. Struck during the Swedish rule over Pomerania, which is now the Baltic coast of Germany and Poland, this crown features the standing figure of Queen Christina of Sweden and stands as a fairly RARE two-year issue with enticing toning and wholesome, original surfaces. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type is listed for 1640-41 but is rare. This type was struck by the Swedish for their territories in Pomerania, on the German shore of the Baltic Sea. On the lapse of the dynasty in 1625, the duchy was contested between Sweden and Brandenburg until they agreed to partition it by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Prussia nibbled away at the Swedish holdings until she seized the remainder in 1815.
Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly expensive.
Specification: silver.
