SB225-11346r.jpg

This specimen was lot 11346 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €240 (about US$250). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 1/48 Taler, (1689-94) - ILA. Pommern-Stettin. Karl XI. NGC VG-8. Countermarked with a crowned 'G' for circulation in the city Greifswald. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." This 1/48 thaler was struck for Pomerania 1672-93 with mintmaster ILA known for 1690-93. Greifswald is a small port on the Baltic Sea between Stralsund and Stettin. We don't know why the city fathers felt it necessary to counterstamp this coin. The counterstamp has obliterated the date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: 1.11 g, billon, 19 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-251; Delzanno-925/926; SB-183 ff; Bruun-12487.
