Künker sale 406, lot 4332

This specimen was lot 4332 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €4,800 (about US$6,298 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"POMMERN-WOLGAST, HERZOGTUM, Philipp Julius, 1592-1625. Reichstaler 1621, Franzburg. RR Feine Patina, sehr schön +. (Germany, duchy of Pomerania-Wolgast, Philip Julius, 1592-1625, thaler of 1621, Franzburg mint. Very rare, fine patina, very fine or better.)"

This rare type was struck 1621 only. On the death of the last native duke in 1637, the duchy was contested between Sweden and Brandenburg until they agreed to partition it by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Prussia nibbled away at the Swedish holdings until she seized the remainder in 1815.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.45 g.
