Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75601
SB923-75601r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75601 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. 20 Zlotych, 2001-MW. Warsaw Mint. NGC PROOF-70 Antiqued. Mintage: Commemorating the Szlak Bursztynowy (Amber Road). Struck in oxidized sterling silver with an amber inlay, this intriguing modern commemorative sheds light on Poland's ancient trading routes. A Denarius with an image of Nero is exhibited on the obverse along with the amber hemisphere." Poland obtained her freedom in the early 1990's with the fall of the Berlin Wall but the new government found the treasury as empty as before. NCLT's ("Non Circulating Legal Tender" coinage) were issued in a bewildering array to help stem the flow. All of this issue was sold with the antique finish shown here. This example realized only half the catalog value. Other twenty zlotych for 2001 include KM Y409, Y415 and Y424.

Recorded mintage: 30,000.

Specification: 28.28 g, 0.925 fine silver, 38.6 mm diameter

Catalog reference: KM-Y411.
