This specimen was lot 75601 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. 10000 Zlotych, 1989-MW. Warsaw Mint. PCGS PROOF-68 Deep Cameo." Pope John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope in several centuries, was a Polish celebrity of the first order and even the Communist regime could not pass up the opportunity to issue NCLT's in his honor, especially if thereby they could earn foreign exchange. Trial strikes exist in nickel.
