Poland 1988-MW 10000 zlotych Fr-137
The first specimen was part of lot 21468 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), which sold for $4,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. Four Piece Proof Set, 1988. Fr-137/140; KM-174/177. Proof set includes 1,000 Zlotych to 10,000 Zlotych. From a mintage of only 1,000 sets. Includes the wooden case of issue. A couple of minor unobtrusive spots. Otherwise free of tone, haze or fog." The second specimen was lot 57588 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[2] noted, "POLAND. 10000 Zlotych, 1988-MW. Warsaw Mint. PCGS PROOF-69 Deep Cameo." Pope John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope in several centuries, was a Polish celebrity of the first order and even the Communist regime could not pass up the opportunity to issue NCLT's in his honor. The 1988 series include 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10,000 zlotych in gold.
