This specimen was part of lot 20453 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $18,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. 4) 1000 Zlotych, 1987. PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. An incredibly popular and enticing set, this grouping offers great vibrancy and radiance, along with exceptional cameo natures. Includes original certificate that accompanied the set." Pope John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope in several centuries, was a Polish celebrity of the first order and even the Communist regime could not pass up the opportunity to issue NCLT's in his honor. The 1987 series include 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10,000 zlotych in gold and a 10,000 zlotych in silver.
