Sincona sale 101, lot 3116

This specimen was lot 3116 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 3,500 CHF (about US$5,275 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"POLEN Stanislas August Poniatowski, 1764-1795. 1 Grosz 1765, Warschau. Münzmeister Peter Nikolaus Gartenberg. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. (kingdom of Poland, Stanislas August Poniatowski, 1764-1795, groschen of 1765, Warsaw mint. Rare in this condition. NGC MS64 RB.)"

This type was struck 1765-95 and has a low catalog value in circulated condition. Several mintmaster's initials are known for 1765. We don't know why this example realized 24 times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 2,089,999, all varieties.

Specification: 3.89 g, copper, this specimen 3.75 g.

Catalog reference: KM 177, Gumowski 2342.
