Piedmont Republic L'AN 9 20 francs
This specimen was lot 1968 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €4,600 (about US$6,404 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, RÉPUBLIQUE SUBALPINE, (1800-1802), AV 20 francs, an 9 (1800), Turin. Victoire de Marengo. Rare. Superbe. (Italy, Subalpine Republic, 1800-02, gold twenty francs, year 9, Turin mint, for the victory at Marengo. Rare, Extremely Fine.)"
This rare piece is listed in the SCWC under the "Italian States--Piedmont Republic," a government as obscure as it was short-lived. As this puppet state was based in Turin, we have filed it under Sardinia.
