Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72076
SB1021-72076r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72076 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. Mint Error -- Struck Off Center -- 10 Cents, 1966. NGC MS-66. A flashy, untoned, and mesmerizing Gem, struck 15% off center with a prominent lip on the obverse." Struck at the United States mint in 1958-66, this type was accompanied by one, five, twenty-five and fifty centavos which used the old commonwealth designs but were struck in base metal. Worn specimens fill dealer junk boxes but nice uncirculated examples are hard to find, being too cheap for dealers to stock. This type superseded the old silver ten centavos of 1937-45.

Recorded mintage: 110,000,000.

Specification: 2 g, copper-nickel-zinc, 18 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-188.
