Philippines 1908-S centavo
This type was struck for the Philippines 1903-36. The early dates (1903-08) are from the Philadelphia mint, the middle dates (1908-20) are from the San Francisco mint and the later dates (1920-36) are from the Manila mint. Philadelphia struck only proofs in 1906 and 1908; this issue from San Francisco marks the first strikes for circulation since 1905. 1908 was also the year when the San Francisco mint began striking Indian Head cents. In 1937, with the inauguration of the Commonwealth, the reverse was redesigned. This second type (KM 179) was struck at Manila 1937-41 and at San Francisco in 1944. Many of the dates are rare, especially in nice condition, and the 1908-S is a better date in high grade. All were demonetized by the Philippine government in the late 1960's when the currency was reformed.
