Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 51256
SB124-51256 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 51256 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. Quarto, 1822-F C. Manila Mint. Ferdinand Vll. NGC Fine Details--Planchet Flaw. Though its planchet displays some fissures, this bust Quarto retains a rustic charm and remains a good example of this RARE date. From the EMO Collection." These coins were minted in Manila under the most primitive conditions and usually look wretched. Garbled legends are normal. This type with the bust of Ferdinand VII on the obverse was struck 1822-24. It is much scarcer than the quarto with the shield obverse (KM 7) struck 1817-33. This specimen is far above average.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14815, EMO-569.2 (Plate coin); KM-9; Cal-96.
