Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 4200

This specimen was lot 4200 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. 8 Reales, ND (Authorized October 2, 1832, commencing October 5, 1832, officially ending December 20, 1834). Type V countermark crowned F.7.0 within circle. On an 1830-GaFS Mexican 8 Reales. Scarce early date host coin. Countermark well struck and centered. Host coin has some smoothing under eagles right wing. Moderate even wear with light attractive iridescent toning. Countermark VF Details, host coin PCGS Genuine--Repaired, EF Details Secure Holder. From the Ray Czahor Collection." This counterstamp was applied 1832-34 to Latin American pesos arriving in Manila from the newly independent republics, none of which were recognized by Spain. The SCWC lists over forty different types receiving this counterstamp.
