Philippines (1832-34) c/s 8 reales KM-63
This specimen was lot 1272 in Jean Elsen sale 118 (Brussels, September 2013), where it sold for €320 (about US$504 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PHILIPPINES, Colonie espagnole, Ferdinand VII (1808-1833), AR 8 reales, 1807 TH, Mexico. Contremarquée F.7. sous une couronne (1832-1834). Rare. Avec une contremarque chinoise (chop mark) au droit. Beau à Très Beau (Philippines, Spanish colony, Ferdinand VII (1808-33), silver eight reales. Countermarked F.7 on a Mexico 1807 portrait dollar. Rare, with a Chinese chop mark, fine to very fine.)"
This counterstamp was applied 1832-34 to Latin American pesos arriving in Manila from the newly independent republics, none of which were recognized by Spain. The SCWC lists over forty different types receiving this counterstamp; this portrait eight reales is one of the scarcer undertypes as it was not supposed to be counterstamped.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
