Pfalz (1394-96) goldgulden Fr-1970a
This specimen was lot 1063 in Sincona sale 50 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 5,000 CHF (about US$6,031 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Pfalz, Kurlinie. Ruprecht II. 1390-1398. Goldgulden o. J. (1394-1396), Oppenheim. +S•IOhES• - BNDICT’ [Doppeladler] Der hl. Johannes steht von vorn, zwischen seinen Füssen die bayerischen Wecken. Rv. +MONETA : IN : OPPENHEIM Quadriertes Wappen Pfalz-Bayern im gespitzten Dreipass. Sehr selten. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. Gutes vorzüglich. (Germany, Electorate of Pfalz, Ruprecht II, 1390-98, undated goldgulden, Oppenheim mint. Obverse: quartered arms of Bavaria and Pfalz on a trilobe; reverse: St. John stands on the Bavarian arms. Very rare, Magnificent condition, Good extremely fine.)"
The Palatinate, on the border with France, was divided several times. Friedberg lists this type but does not mention the mints.
