The gold libra superseded the silver sol as Peru's main unit of currency in 1898. The libra weighed the same as a British sovereign and equalled ten soles. The type was struck until 1930 and again 1959-69, along with 1/5 libras and 1/2 libras. The issues of the sizties were strictly bullion coins and never appear in circulated condition. This example was lot 28881 on Jan 11 2011 and sold for $345 at the 2011 January World & Ancient coins Non-Floor Session #3013 by Heritage Auctions. The catalog description reads: "Republic gold Libra 1964, MS65 NGC, full mint brilliance."
