This specimen was lot 72396 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $2,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 5 Soles, 1962. Lima Mint. NGC MS-67. A tremendous Superb-Gem, this wholesome and glistening example yields a nearly flawless appealing and much appealing detail throughout." This denomination, struck 1956-69, was theoretically a circulating coin but actually was a bullion piece like her sisters, the gold ten, twenty, fifty and hundred soles. We don't know why this example brought twelve times the catalog value.

Catalog reference: Fr-72; KM-235.
