Peru 1897-JF sol
This specimen was lot 72299 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Sol, 1897-JF. Lima Mint. NGC AU-58. Retaining a great deal of brilliant luster, this shimmering, nearly-uncirculated specimen dazzles with wholesome originality, a slight prooflike nature, and virtually no toning." This is the final subtype of this design and was struck 1893-97 and 1914-15. The subsequent issue of the 1920's was only 0.500 fine silver. In 1898, Peru went on the gold standard and introduced the libra (a gold coin matching the British sovereign) and suspended production of the silver sol. Subsidiary coin coinage continued without interruption but the bullion came from melted down soles.
