Peru 1897-VN 1/5 sol
This specimen was lot 75900 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $129. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/5 Sol, 1897-LIMA VN. Lima Mint. NGC MS-64+." This quinto was struck 1888-1917 in Lima, Peru. Most dates are readily available but 1914, 1915 and 1917 are scarce. There are two varieties for the year, that with the assayers JF and with the assayers VN (shown here).The type was replaced by a copper-nickel twenty centavos in 1918. An earlier type, with a slightly different figure of seated Liberty, was struck 1863-75 (KM 191).
Recorded mintage: 745,000 including assayer JF.
