Peru 1872-YJ dinero

This dinero, or dime, was struck 1863-77 in Lima, Peru, in respectable numbers. Many were saved and uncirculated specimens are available. Most issued after 1898 were made from melted down one sol coins. Varieties and overdates abound. A later type, with a slightly different figure of seated Liberty, was issued 1893-1916 (KM 204). The silver coin was replaced in 1918 by a copper-nickel ten centavos. An 1872/62 overdate exists, as well as a YJ/YB over-assayer.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rather scarce.

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge.
