Peru 1855-L MB 5 centimos KM-Pn9
This specimen was lot 73522 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Silver 5 Centimos Pattern, 1855-MB. Philadelphia Mint. NGC PROOF-35. Despite its circulated status, this example remains a VERY RARE instance of the denomination in pattern form, and stands, along with the other pattern issues of 1855, as among the first foreign coins struck at a U.S. mint." This pattern, made while Peru was organizing the switch to decimal coinage, was not adopted. The standing liberty design was used on a medio real of 1858 but when the medio dinero was adopted in 1863, a seated liberty was used instead.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.25 g, 0.900 fine silver.
