Peru 1849 1/4 real
This specimen was lot 41381 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/4 Real, 1849-LIMA. Lima Mint. NGC MS-61. A less commonly encountered date, this 1/4 Real offers Mint State sharpness and luster accompanied by a pleasant pale gray tone. From the EMO Collection." This type was struck at Lima 1826-56. The date is listed in the SCWC as slightly better. All Peruvian minors are scarcer in nice condition than the catalog values would indicate; among the quarter reales, only the 1855 is frequently seen. Many overdates are listed, including 1849/38 and 1849/8.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.84 g, 0.903 fine silver.
Catalog reference: EMO-3324.1 (Plate coin); KM-143.1.
