This specimen was lot 7069 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Real, 1823-JP. NGC MS-63. RARE date due to Republicans controlling the mint for a majority of the year. Lightly toned with attractive frosty luster. Ex: Whittier Collection." This specimen is one of a series struck 1811-1823 at Lima, Peru, during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1808-33). As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris[2] noted the abundance of Ferdinand VII one reales as follows: Mexico City, Potosi, Santiago, Guatemala (all common), Lima, Zacatecas (somewhat scarce), Bogotá (scarce), Popayán (rare). There is a very scarce issue from Cuzco (KM 114.2).

Specification: 3.38 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .097 troy oz ASW.
