Peru 1797-L IJ 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 1251 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 2 escudos, Charles IV, 1797 IJ, NGC VF 25, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Almenara. Lightly toned and well struck, only minor marks per the assigned grade (arguably deserving of better, at least VF 35). Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection." This type was struck 1792-1808 for king Charles IV. He succeeded Charles III in 1788, but as there were delays in getting punches for the new bust out to the Latin American mints, the old hubs were used with the new king's name thru 1791. Assayer IJ is recorded for 1787-1803.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.
