Ponterio sale 148, lot 952

This specimen was lot 7320 in Ponterio sale 148 (New York, January 2009), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Escudos, 1791-IJ. VERY RARE. Charles IV with bust of Charles III; legend reads 'CAROL.IV'. Planchet flaw, EXTREMELY FINE/ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." This type was struck during the transition from Charles III (1759-88) to Charles IV (1788-1808). While eight escudos from Peru are reasonably available, the smaller gold denominations are all very scarce.
