Peru 1744-L V real
This specimen was lot 759 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 1 real, 1744 V, ex-Ugaz. Good full pillars-and-waves harboring complete date, slightly doubled full cross with second date below, VF with contrasting toning, a few light old scratches. Pedigreed to the Jorge Ugaz Collection." This type was struck 1729-47 for the Bourbon king Philip V. Assayer de Vargas ("V") stamped his coins 1739-49. In 1728, the cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine silver. In 1732, the Mexico City mint began its transition to milled coinage, a process Lima would not undertake until 1751.
