Peru 1701-L H 2 reales
This specimen was lot 676 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $570. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 2 reales, 1701 H. Oblong flan with one straight side, good full cross-lions-castles and pillars with complete (small) crown at top, two bold assayers, XF with dark contrasting toning. Pedigreed to the Jorge Ugaz Collection of Lima Silver Cob 2 Reales." This is the final date two reales cob for Charles II, who died early in 1700. Many of the Latin American mints struck posthumous coins of Charles II, likely trying to avoid endorsing Philip V or his Austrian rival, archduke Charles. Assayer Hurtado stamped coins 1695-1710.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 6.72 grams.
