Künker Auction 424, lot 636

This specimen was lot 636 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$4,248 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · PASSAU, BISTUM Sebastian von Pötting, 1673-1689. 1/6 Dukat 1674, Passau. Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat//Fünffeldiges Wappen (Passauer Wolf / Vierfeldiges Familienwappen) mit Mitra, Kreuz und Krone, dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt. GOLD. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Stempelfehler auf der Vorderseite, vorzüglich. (Germany, bishopric of Passau, Sebastian von Pötting, 1673-89, one sixth ducat of 1674, Passau mint. Obverse: bust right in bishop's robes; reverse: five fold arms of Passau and the bishop's family with miter, cross and crown, crossed crozier and sword behind. Extremely rare, die defect on the obverse, extremely fine.)"

This is the only issue of this denomination from this state. A quarter ducat (Fr-2066) was also struck in 1674, along with some minors (KM 5, KM 7, KM 9). The bishopric of Passau was annexed to Bavaria in 1803 and 1805.
