Künker sale 403, lot 1417

This specimen was lot 1417 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,624 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST INNOCENZ XI., 1676-1689. Die Münzstätte Rom. Piastra A IX/1684, Rom. DEXTERA / TVA DOMINE / PERCVSSIT / INIMICVM / 1684. Stempelschneider Giovanni Hamerani. Die Stola auf der Vorderseite mit Blumenranken verziert, die Rückseite mit Jahreszahl 1684 in geschlossenen Palmzweigen. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. (Papal States, Innocent XI, 1676-89, piastra of the year 9, Rome mint. The stole on the obverse is decorated with floral tendrils, the reverse with the year 1684 in closed palm branches. Handsome patina, extremely fine.)"

This issue is among the more available. This type was issued 1684 in several varieties (with and without date, with and without bow on wreath, year VIII and IX). The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler. The reverse motto, DEXTERA TVA DOMINE PERCVSSIT INIMICVM, comes from Exodus 15:6: "Thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy."
