Künker sale 403, lot 1438

This specimen was lot 1438 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €500 (about US$656 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST INNOCENZ XI., 1676-1689. Die Münzstätte Rom. Giulio A XI/1686, Rom. Mit gerolltem Rahmen, Blattwerk und Bändern auf der Rückseite. Vorzüglich. (Papal States, Innocent XI, 1676-89, giulio of the year 11, 1686 (sic), Rome mint. Reverse: rolled frame, foliage and ribbons. Extremely fine.)"

We believe the auctioneers got lots 1437 and 1438 mixed up. Both are giulii of Innocent XI, one dated 1685, year X, and the another 1686, year XI. The type was struck 1684-88 and undated and is common. The reverse motto is from Proverbs 28:27: "He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.05 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 3,03 g.
