Jean Elsen sale 132, lot 612

This specimen was lot 612 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €90 (about US$114 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Innocent XI (1676-1689), (Benedetto Odescalchi), AR giulio, 1684, an 8, Rome. D/ Armoiries. R/ Inscription en cinq lignes dans un cartouche orné. Petite tache. presque Superbe. (Italy, Pontifical State, Innocent XI (1676-89), silver giulio of 1684, year 8, Rome mint. Obverse: arms; reverse: motto in ornate cartouche. Tiny stain, about Extremely Fine.)"

In the reform of 1684, the giulio was reduced from 3.19 g to 3.05 g. Berman records nine different giulii for this pope with this type struck 1684-88. The reverse motto is from Proverbs 28:27: "He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack."
