Papal States (1714) grosso

from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 75735

This specimen was lot 75735 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $105. The catalog description^[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal (States of the Church). Grosso, Year XV (1715/6). Rome Mint. Clement XI. PCGS EF-45." The grosso was five baiocchi or one twentieth of a scudo. Many varieties were issued in the 1710's. The subsequent type (KM 760) had a halo added to the bust of St. Paul.
