This specimen was lot 1316 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (New York, April 2010). The catalog description[1] noted, "VATICAN-PAPAL STATES. Innocent XI, 1676-1689. Piastra, 1684, An.VIII. Robed bust r. in camauro. Palm wreath encloses Latin DEXTERA/ TVA DOMINE/ PERCVSSIT/ INIMICVM, Your Right Hand, O Lord. Has Smitten the Enemy. Pearl toning with undercurrent of rose. Choice Very Fine. From the Eliasberg Collection." This date is a one year type struck in 1684. Several other piastras (KM 451.1 thru 451.3 and KM 452.1 and KM 452.2) were issued that year. The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler. The reverse motto, DEXTERA TVA DOMINE PERCVSSIT INIMICVM comes from Exodus 15:6: "Thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy."
