This specimen was lot 6115 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN, Gregor XV. 1621-1623. Quadrupla o. J. Rom. Wappen, darüber gekreuzte Schlüssel und Tiara//Die betende Jungfrau Maria mit Sternenkranz steht v. v. auf Mondsichel und Wolken, umher Strahlenkranz. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Bearbeitungsspuren, fast sehr schön. (Italy, Papal State, Gregory XV, 1621-23, undated quadrupla d'oro, Rome mint. Obverse: arms under the papal tiara; reverse: the Virgin Mary seated on the crescent moon in a glory. Very rare, tooled, about very fine.)"
This denomination was the largest gold coin issued by the pope during the seventeenth century. Called a quadrupla scudi d'oro, it was about 4% lighter than the gold four ducats in weight.
