Papal States (1592-1605) testone Ber-1445
This specimen was lot 577 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Clément VIII (1592-1605), (Ippolito Aldobrandini), AR teston, Rome. D/ Armoiries. R/ Saint Pierre assis à g. dans sa barque. Beau à Très Beau. (Italy, Pontifical State, Clement VIII (1592-1605), silver testone, Rome mint. Obverse: arms; reverse: St. Peter to left, seated in a boat. Fine to very fine.)"
The tight flan and light weight suggests that this specimen has been clipped. Berman notes fifteen different testoni for this ruler; while this type is not rare, it is priced about double the most common.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: 9.59 g, .916 fine silver[2], this specimen 8,80 g.
