Künker sale 403, lot 1317

This specimen was lot 1317 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,561 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST MARCELLUS II., 1555. Die Münzstätte Rom. Giulio o. J., Rom. Mit neuen losen Getreideähren auf der Vorderseite und dem Münzzeichen C in Kreuzglobus (Girolamo Ceuli) auf der Rückseite. RR Schöne Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Spezialsammlung Münzen und Medaillen der Päpste, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 233, Osnabrück 2013, Nr. 1217. (Papal States, Marcellus II, 1555, undated giulio, Rome mint, with new loose ears of grain on the obverse and the mint mark C in an orb (Girolamo Ceuli) on the reverse. Very rare, handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Two grossi made a giulio and three giulii made a testone. Larger coins such as the silver scudo and piastra would require the introduction of the screw press. Marcellus II reigned as pope for only 22 days and his coins are rare. Another giulio (Ber-1033) was struck in his name at Ancona.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.20 g, 0.920 fine silver, this specimen 3,13 g.
