Sincona sale 59, lot 1683

This specimen was lot 1683 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,030 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | Vatican - Church State, Clemens VII. 1523-1534. 1/2 Scudo d'oro o. J. Bologna. Mezzo scudo del sole. Selten. Fast sehr schön. (Papal States, Clement VII, 1523-34, undated half gold scudo, Bologna mint. Rare, About very fine.)"

The Bologna mint began issuing gold for the popes during the reign of Urban VI (1378-89) and continued until Pius VI (1774-99). This mezzo scudo d'oro of Clement VII (1523-34) accompanied a scudo d'oro (Fr-342).
