Papal St Fr-23 rev Tom F.jpg

Sixtus IV (1471-84) sponsored the building of the Sistine Chapel and was responsible for numerous public works in and around Rome, including aqueducts and bridges. Sixtus also crafted the papal bull upon which the Spanish Inquisition was founded. We are hazy on the distinction between a fiorino di camera, of which this is the first type, and an ordinary ducat such as Fr-25.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.39 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-23, Ber-448.
