Ottingen in the late eighteenth century

This specimen was lot 31048 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Öttingen-Wallerstein. Ignaz Taler 1694-(h) UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Augsburg mint. An elusive type, the only Taler produced under Ignaz of Wallerstein's reign. Despite the qualifier, the piece retains ample appeal as pleasing ecru retone dances in the fields, enlivening the charming design - a hand reaching down from the heavens to water a potted bouquet. From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." The SCWC notes three thalers from this state in 1694:

  • KM 7/Dav-7141 (*WOLF. IGNA. CARL - ANT. G. Z. ÖTTING.),
  • KM 8/Dav-7142 (*IGNATIVS COMES - AB ÖTTINGEN+), shown here;
  • KM 9/Dav-7143 (WOLFGANG. C - Z. ÖTTINGEN).

The one shown here is the most available of the three. The county was later partitioned between Baden and Wurttemberg in 1806.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 8, Dav-7142, Forster-348.
