SB421-50152r.jpg

This specimen was lot 50152 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted,

"OMAN. 10 Omani Rials, 1995. PCGS PROOF-69 Deep Cameo Gold Shield. Struck to celebrate the 25th National Day anniversary. Usually struck in silver, this RARE gold striking features the Central Bank of Oman building and remains in untouched condition with deeply reflective fields and finely frosted designs. To date, only two examples have been certified, this piece, and one that has achieved the same grade at NGC. From the Pinnacle Collection."

Oman, long a British protectorate, achieved full independence in 1971. Coinage began that year. She has watched enviously as her neighbors, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, harvest billions of dollars by selling oil, of which little occurs in Omani territory. This type also comes in silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 36.4 g, 0.916 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 142 (silver), Fr-18; KM-142a (gold).
