Oldenburg (1619-22) thaler Dav-7109
This specimen was lot 4187 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$7,852 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"OLDENBURG, GRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1774 HERZOGTUM, AB 1829 GROSSHERZOGTUM. Anton Günther, 1603-1667. Reichstaler o. J. (1619-1622), Jever, mit Titel Ferdinands II. 1. Münzperiode, Münzmeister Nikolaus Wintgens (1614-1622). RR Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Tönung, sehr schön. (Germany, county of Oldenburg, Anton Gunther, 1603-67, undated thaler, Jever mint, in the name of Ferdinand II, first period. Rare, attractive example with fine toning, very fine.)"
The SCWC has attributed this rare thaler to 1603 but we will defer to the opinion of the auctioneers, who are experts on German coins. Anton Günther, count of Oldenburg 1603-67, was also lord of Jever, where this coin was struck. After his death, Jever passed to the dukes of Anhalt-Zerbst and Oldenburg to the kings of Denmark.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28,57 g.
