Nurnberg 1742-PGN thaler Dav-2482
This specimen was lot 20977 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $2,530. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nurnberg. Karl VII Taler 1742-PGN, AU58 NGC, rich old-time patina with superb details, a most impressive type featuring a bust of this pretender to the Habsburg throne and the city view on the reverse. Very scarce type and a superior example." While most Nurnberg thalers are scarce, this one is rare. The city was mediatized by Napoleon in 1806 and handed over to Bavaria. Karl VII failed in his attempt to seize the imperial throne and saw his electorate of Bavaria devastated by Austrian troops.
