Nurnberg 1733-PPW thaler Dav-2480
This specimen was lot 31039 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $13,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Nürnberg. Free City Taler 1733-PPW MS64 Prooflike NGC, Nürnberg mint. Another highly important candidate from Nürnberg's pictorial issues, this instance depicting an engaging artillery scene clearly from the hand of engraver Peter Paul Werner, displaying an aptitude for depth and detail. With notable flash and seemingly endless mirrors that practically demand NGC's Prooflike designation, yet precluded from loftier designations by wisps to the fields. Regardless, we anticipate placement in only the most advanced cabinet with a penchant for quality. Ex. Dr. Busso Peus Nachfolger Auction 390 (May 2007, Lot 307). From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." This one year type is rare and expensive. While shooting thalers are numerous, this is the only one we know of featuring cannons instead of hand weapons. The city was annexed to Bavaria in 1806.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
