Nurnberg 1721-PGN 8 ducats Fr-1904
This specimen was lot 40245 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $78,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "A Marvelous City-View 8 Ducat Issue of Charles VI. GERMANY. Nurnberg. 8 Ducat, 1721-PGN. NGC AU-55. Obverse: Large mailed Charles VI bust right; Reverse: Single-headed eagle wearing crown of Charlemagne and holding scepter and orb flies over somewhat distant city view, "AVGVSTO DOMINO TVTA AC SECVRA PARENTE EST" (translated: "Safe and Secure under the August Lord God"). The date is in a chronogram woven into this Latin legend. A massive multiple ducat issue, struck using the same dies that were used for the silver Taler issue (Dav-2476). Preserved in charming quality, the surfaces display evidence of past light handling, but the appearance remains entirely appealing with exquisite engraving on display through the artistic designs and bold reflective flash appearing around the protected areas. Stunning reddish orange tone further compliments the surfaces, pushing the appearance to rarefied levels. EXTREMELY RARE and one of only a few that exist in this weight; once owned by Nurnberg specialist Herbert J. Erlanger as well, making this piece all the more desirable. Ex: Herbert J. Erlanger Collection." In addition to the thaler mentioned above, a six ducat (KM 286) and a ten ducat (KM 288) were also struck on this occasion.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
