Nurnberg 1703-GFN 4 ducat Fr-1879
The first specimen was lot 2743 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 5,000 CHF (about US$6,176 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Nurnberg, 4 Dukaten 1703. Vorzüglich. Leicht gewellt (Germany, city of Nurnberg, quadruple ducat of 1703, extremely fine, slightly bent.)"
The second specimen was lot 2023 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €60,000 (about US$83,502 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"NÜRNBERG, STADT, 4 Dukaten 1703. Lammprägung. MONETA - AVREA REIP - NORIMB . Drei Wappen, in der Mitte GFN . // . PACEM DA NOBIS CHRISTE BENIGNE . (das Chronogramm ergibt die Jahreszahl 1703) Lamm mit Friedensfahne auf Erdhalbkugel. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 62+ (5959787-003). GOLD. RR Prachtexemplar. Min. gewellt, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Erworben 1952 bei der Firma Julius Jenke, München. (Germany, city of Nuremberg, quadruple ducat of 1703, Paschal Lamb. Obverse: three arms, "GFN" in the center; reverse: date in chronogram, the Paschal Lamb bearing a banner labeled PAX and standing on the globe. Very rare, choice example, graded NGC MS-62+, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This type is accompanied by gold three (Fr-1880) and six ducats, also rare. The date is a chronogram buried in the reverse legend.
